MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jaden Ivey raced his way to 22 points and Zach Edey controlled the action inside, helping Purdue overpower Yale for a 78-56 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Ivey, one of the fastest players in college basketball, went 3 for 6 from 3-point range and 7 for 9 at the free-throw line in 27 minutes. The 7-foot-4 Edey made the most of his size advantage against the Ivy League champions, finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds in 19 minutes. Azar Swain scored 18 points on 8-for-19 shooting for Yale, which had won 11 of 13.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Johnny Davis scored 25 points and sparked a second-half comeback as Wisconsin withstood Colgate’s 3-point assault and beat the Raiders 67-60 in an NCAA Tournament first-round game Friday night. The third-seeded Badgers snapped Colgate’s 15-game winning streak and advanced to a second-round game Sunday against No. 11 seed Iowa State. The Cyclones defeated LSU 59-54 earlier Friday. Davis had Wisconsin’s last 14 points and showed he’s all the way back from the injured left ankle that knocked the All-America guard and Big Ten player of the year out of the Badgers’ regular-season finale.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Caitlin Clark had 27 points and 10 assists and Monika Czinano added 18 points as Iowa defeated Illinois State 98-58 in a first-round NCAA Tournament game Friday. Gabbie Marshall and Tomi Taiwo each had 13 points for the Hawkeyes. They are the No. 2 seed in the Greensboro Region and will play No. 10 seed Creighton on Sunday in the second round. It was the 16th double-double of the season for Clark, an Associated Press first-team All-American who leads the nation in scoring at 27.4 points per game. COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Ashley Owusu scored 24 points and Diamond Miller added 23 to lift fourth-seeded Maryland to a 102-71 rout of 13th-seeded Delaware. Jasmine Dickey led the Blue Hens with 31 points, but they couldn’t keep up with a Maryland team that looked healthy and ready for this NCAA Tournament. The Terrapins advanced to face 12th-seeded Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday. Katie Benzan scored 17 points for Maryland. The Terps finished with five players in double figures. Angel Reese scored 15 points and Chloe Bibby had 11.
LOUISVILLE, KY (AP) — Kayleigh Truong scored a career-high 20 points to lead Gonzaga to a 68-55 victory over Nebraska in the first round of NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. Truong, a junior guard, scored 15 of her points in the second half, and those came after she landed awkwardly in a second quarter collision with Nebraska’s Jaz Shelley. That caused her to miss the final five minutes of the half. Sam Haiby led the Huskers with a season-high 20 points.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Hall of Fame coach Kim Mulkey needed only one season at LSU to bring women’s NCAA Tournament games back to Baton Rouge for the first time since 2014. Mulkey says she didn’t envision where the Tigers would be now when she left a powerhouse Baylor team for one that won just nine games last season. LSU is a No. 3 seed in the Spokane Region and opens play at home on Saturday against 14th-seed Jackson State. The first game of the day is sixth-seed Ohio State versus 11th-seed Missouri State in Baton Rouge.
UNDATED (AP) — Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg announced he eliminated the position of special assistant to the head coach and that Doc Sadler would leave the program. The folksy Sadler had grown into a beloved figure among fans during his six-year run as head coach from 2006-12. He returned when Hoiberg was hired three years ago, spending the first two years as an assistant and this season as special assistant with no on-court coaching duties. The announcement came a day after Hoiberg announced the departure of chief recruiter Matt Abdelmassih. The moves are part of a restructuring following three straight 20-loss seasons.
