The Salem City Council agreed with City Manager Rex Barbee and the person in charge of the city’s animal pound Stephanie Rakers that they wanted nothing to do with Marion County’s dog issues.

Barbee told the City Council Monday night he had met with Marion County Board Chair Debbie Smith on dog control issues.

“We don’t want any part of it.  We have come a long way within the last couple of years to make our facility something we are proud of.  We think the additional traffic without any real compensation to cover for it, we are basically at capacity for what he have in the city.”

Barbee says the city currently has three trained to provide after-hours coverage for animal needs but doesn’t want to stretch the staff to cover the rest of the county.

The issue was not on the agenda but came up under the city manager’s report to the city council.
