SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Joe Girard made two free throws with 0.8 seconds left in double overtime and Syracuse beat previously unbeaten Indiana 112-110 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Syracuse (4-3) won a double-overtime game at home for the first time since Feb. 25, 1971. Indiana (6-1), which had 25 turnovers and overcame an 18-point, second-half deficit, didn’t get off a shot at the final buzzer. Buddy Boeheim scored 27 points and Jimmy Boeheim added a career-high 26 to lead Syracuse. Girard finished with 22 points. Trayce Jackson-Davis led the Hoosiers (6-1) with 31 points and 16 rebounds.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Jaden Ivey scored 18 points and Brandon Newman added 13 to help No. 2 Purdue rout Florida State 93-65 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Boilermakers won their seventh straight home game in the event and are 7-0 for the first time since 2015-16. Florida State was led by Caleb Mills with 22 points but never got closer than eight in the second half. Purdue sealed the win with a 12-0 spurt midway through the second half.
DALLAS (AP) — Michigan moved up to No. 2 in the second-to-last College Football Playoff rankings. The Wolverines join Georgia, Alabama and Cincinnati in the top four heading into conference championship weekend. Oklahoma State is fifth going into the Big 12 championship game Saturday against Baylor. Notre Dame is sixth with no games left and no head coach. Brian Kelly left the Fighting Irish and was introduced as the new coach at LSU on Tuesday, three days after independent Notre Dame finished its season 11-1. On Wednesday, the the conference commissioners who manage the playoff will meet to try to reach a consensus on playoff expansion.
ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Michigan’s Aidan Hutchinson was named defensive player of the year and Michigan State’s Mel Tucker was named coach of the year in the Big Ten. The two were among honorees announced by the league. Hutchinson leads the conference and is third nationally with 13 sacks. Tucker has led the Spartans to a 10-2 record in his second year after they were 2-5 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
UNDATED (AP) — Virginia Tech has hired Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry as its head coach. The school made the announcement Tuesday. Pry has been with Penn State since 2014, first as co-defensive coordinator before becoming the defensive coordinator in 2016. Penn State has ranked in the top five in defense in the Big Ten every season he’s been there. He also has a history with the Hokies, having served as a graduate assistant working with the defensive line under coordinator Bud Foster from 1995-97. Pry says the opportunity to return to Blacksburg is exciting not only for him, but for his family.
