The National Weather Service has confirmed a 2.1-mile long tornado on the northwest side of Richview in Washington County on Sunday night.
The tornado was rated at the lowest EF level of 0 with an estimated peak wind of 85 miles per hour. It occurred around 9:55 pm.
A survey completed by the weather service on Tuesday showed the tornado touched Richview just north of I-64 causing primarily tree damage. However, one home was damaged on Chestnut Road. The tornado traveled northeast, again primarily causing tree damage, and crossed Tower Road where two machine sheds just west of US 51 and south of Holly Road were damaged. The tornado lifted shortly thereafter.
The weather service reports they could never verify if a tornado touched down near the Walnut Hill Road southeast of Centralia where a report of a funnel cloud was reported Sunday night by a trained weather spotter.
The tornado was one of five now confirmed in southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois on Sunday night.
The longest tornado was on the ground for more than 42 miles from near St. Mary’s, Missouri and Chester, Illinois. The EF3 tornado had an estimated wind speed of 150 miles per hour. Another EF3 tornado was reported near Fredericktown, Missouri. Two other weaker tornados had shot paths in Southeastern Missouri.
