ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan is abuzz ahead of a big showdown this weekend in college football. No. 6 Michigan will visit No. 8 Michigan Staet on Saturday. Both are undefeated. The winner will get a boost to their Big Ten and national championship hopes. Jim Harbaugh grew up watching the series as the son of an assistant coach at Michigan. He played in rivalry as a star quarterback for the Wolverines. He is 3-3 as a coach against the Spartans, including a loss last year. The two teams haven’t met with rankings this high since 1964.
UNDATED (AP) — Drew Timme of Gonzaga is the lone unanimous selection on The Associated Press preseason All-America team. He was joined by Illinois big man Kofi Cockburn, UCLA guard Johnny Juzang, Villanova point guard Collin Gillespie and Indiana forward Trayce Jackson-Davis. Timme was a second-team All-American last season while leading the Zags to the NCAA championship game for the second time. Cockburn looked into leaving for the NBA before returning. Juzang is back after leading the Bruins to the Final Four and Gillespie returns after suffering a knee injury. Jackson-Davis is looking to get the Hoosiers back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016.
UNDATED (AP) — Purdue coach Jeff Brohm will stick with Aidan O’Connell as his starting quarterback. Indiana coach Tom Allen is bracing for another change. The quarterback quandary has resurfaced after both teams lost by double digits this weekend. While Brohm says he’s not making a change this week, Allen may not have a choice. Allen lists his top two quarterbacks, Michael Penix Jr. and Jack Tuttle, as week to week with injuries.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin offensive lineman Kayden Lyles says he’s transferring. Lyles tweeted Monday that he plans to go elsewhere for his final season of eligibility. Lyles made a combined 16 starts on both sides of the line for the Badgers. He started seven games at defensive end in 2018, four at left guard in 2019, four at center in 2020 and one at center this season. He appeared in five games this season, sitting out the last two.
UNDATED (AP) — For the first time this regular season, there were no teams making their season debut in The Associated college football poll. Iowa State and BYU rejoined the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank, but the number of teams that have been ranked for at least one week this season remains at 44. Iowa State is back after four weeks out. The Cyclones were preseason No. 7, but two September losses sent them tumbling. Reality Check looks at the other preseason ranked teams currently unranked and assess their chances of getting back into the Top 25.
UNDATED (AP) — Buffalo is back on top of the Mid-American Conference sacks chart after its school-record performance against Akron. The Bulls have been the MAC’s leading sack team the past two years, but had slipped a bit this season under a new coaching staff and were fifth entering their game at Akron on Saturday. Buffalo sacked DJ Irons 10 times and Zach Gibson once. The 11 sacks were most by a Football Bowl Subdivision team since Miami (Ohio) recorded 12 against Akron in 2019.
