A 44-year-old rural Hoffman man was very seriously injured when struck by a car early Wednesday morning while lying on Route 161 on the extreme west side of the city by Monken Chrysler-Nissan.

Centralia Police Chief Greg Dodson says a woman had pulled over to call police to report the man in the roadway when an eastbound car then struck the man.  The man, identified as William Campbell of State Route 161 between Hoffman and Centralia, was initially taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia and then transferred to a St. Louis Hospital.

Dodson says police had dealt with the man a short time earlier when taking a report of a disorderly male at the Best Western Motel.  Reports indicate Campbell appeared to be highly intoxicated and loud, but did not commit any crime and was told he was free to go following the investigation.

Dodson says Campbell had been dropped off at the motel earlier by a Clinton County Sheriff’s Deputy who gave him a ride after serving an order of protection that no longer allowed him to be at the home.

Campbell was struck by the car at 3:47 Wednesday.   The driver of the vehicle has not been located.
