The Salem City Council will have further discussion Tuesday night on a petition seeking to have the city reduce the deer population within the city limits.
City Manager Rex Barbee will present the council with a proposed ordinance to allow limited bow and arrow hunting in the city. He says there are some communities in the area that have allowed bow hunting within the city limits. Barbee says bow hunters could apply for permits through city hall with the City Manager or their designee approving the applications and where the hunting could take place.
The council will discuss reinstituting employee residency requirements or requiring employees to live within so many miles of the city limits. Councilman Craig Morton has requested the conversation due to questions he has received about some city employees living a considerable distance outside the city limits. Barbee notes the city council previously removed any residency requirement in 2004 and modified the ordinance again in 2008 to remove language regarding the assessing of any fee for employees to live outside the city limits. The current ordinance contains language that prohibits the employee living outside the corporate limits from driving any city-owned vehicle home at the end of the workday. Barbee says the agenda item is intended to provide for discussion on the pros and cons of the matter with no action at Tuesday night’s meeting.
The council will also review the bid results for the construction of the road that will lead into the new Little Egypt Golf Car development off North Hotze Road. The city is administering a 50-percent matching fund grant to the business through the Illinois Department of Transportation. Little Egypt Golf Cars Ltd is providing a letter of credit to cover their 50-percent share of the $1,065,000 project.
The council will review their annual audit from Fick, Eggemeyer, and Williamson CPA.
The Bryan-Bennett Library is requesting the city council once again extend a tax levy on the library’s behalf.
The council will be asked to give their approval to a renewal package on the city’s health insurance coverage plan through Mutual Medical that was renewed in April.
Barbee says as a result of total claim costs being less than prior years, there will be little change in the city’s cost of providing the benefits package in the coming year.
