Democratic legislators have released their proposed redistricting maps for the state’s 118 House and 59 Senate Districts. They say the newly drawn districts ensure the broad racial and geographic diversity of Illinois is reflected in the General Assembly, but that Republicans called partisan.
State Sen. Omar Aquino, chair of the Senate’s redistricting committee, said in a statement Friday evening that “redistricting is about making sure all voices are heard, and that’s exactly what this map accomplishes.”
Rep. Tim Butler of Springfield, the Republican spokesman of the House Redistricting Committee, called the maps partisan and ”yet another attempt to mislead voters in an effort to block fair elections.”
All of Marion County would move into the 110th State Representative District that would also include all of Clay, Richland, Edwards, and Wabash Counties, the portion of Centralia in Clinton County as well as parts of southern Fayette and Effingham Counties and the north and east parts of Wayne County. The district would then join the 109th house district to make up the 55th Senate Seat that would stretch almost the width of the state from parts of eastern Madison and St. Clair Counties all the way to the Indiana border.
The rest of Clinton County would be in the 109 district along with Bond and part of the southwest portion of Fayette County. The 116th District would include all of Jefferson, Perry, and White Counties and parts of Hamilton, extreme eastern Washington County, and parts of Wayne and Hamilton Counties. It would join the 115th district to make up the 58th Senate District that would stretch from the Missouri to Indiana State Lines. The 115th District includes the rest of Washington County, southern St. Clair, all of Monroe and Randolph Counties, and part of northern Jackson County.
