John Ross Cannon, age 84, of Salem, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
John was born on August 7, 1942, in rural Xenia, Illinois, the son of Amos Greene Cannon and Rosa Lena (Van Meter) Cannon. He married Sharon Elaine (Woodward) Cannon on December 23, 1969, in Salem, and together they shared 56 years of marriage.
A lifelong farmer at heart, John dedicated his working years to agriculture and excavating. He was no stranger to hard work and took great pride in a job well done. Whether tending to the farm, operating equipment, or working on a project, John enjoyed staying busy and working with his hands. Farming was more than an occupation to him; it was a way of life.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War in the 82nd Airborne, attaining the rank of Specialist Fourth Class (SP4). During his two years of military service, he was awarded the Bronze Star. His service and sacrifice reflected his dedication to his country and will always be remembered with honor and gratitude.
When he wasn’t working, John enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He appreciated the simple things in life and found enjoyment in the land, the changing seasons, and the peacefulness of nature.
Above all, John was a husband, father, and hardworking man whose life was built around family, service, and a strong work ethic. The memories he leaves behind will be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
John is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Elaine (Woodward) Cannon; his children, Troy Cannon of Iuka, Mark Cannon of Texas, Tina Wrench and husband Mike of Florida, Cindy Schilling of Florida, Tara Cannon of Salem, Shane Cannon and wife Stacy of Colorado; a granddaughter who John and Sharon raised, Stacie Collier and husband Clint of Alabama; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews; his church family at Salem First Pentecostal Church; and his hunting and fishing buddies.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Tony Cannon; his siblings, William “Bill” Kenneth Cannon, Charles “Ray” Cannon, Ausby “Gene” Cannon, and Mary Lou Waggoner; and a grandson, Jayden Collier.
