The final XC meet of the regular season was a great one for The Woodlawn High School Cross Country team today, as all 3 of the Cardinal runners would bring home a trophy from the Hamilton County “Roger Lee” Invitational!
First it was Freshman Camden Hughes in the Boys JV Race who would have his moment. Hughes hasn’t shied away from competition this season at all, as the freshman has ran mostly against Varsity competition all season long. Today he got his shot in a JV race and he made the most of it finishing 2nd as the race runner up and bringing home some hardware (Top 10). It solidifies a ton of hard work and many tough days that the freshman has put in to earn his stripes and today it was his time to shine.
The Cardinals weren’t done yet though as Sr. Zelena Koch would compete in her final high school regular season meet of her career and she would finish 5th place overall in the Girls Varsity Race securing a meet trophy (Top 15). This was the 13th race in a row of her senior season she has secured either a medal, meet T-shirts award, or trophy! Capping off one heck of a Senior regular season.
She was joined today by her freshman sister Zaylor Koch, who would run a very strong race, and bring home a trophy finishing 11th overall in the Girls Varsity Division. This was the 2nd race in a row the younger Koch would finish with a Varsity medal or trophy. Zaylor showed she is maturing as a runner and has certainly stepped it up as just a freshman, as the season has progressed. She will undoubtedly follow in her older sisters Zelena’s footsteps in the next 3 years of success in her high school career! She had a really strong finish in her 3rd mile today! It was a great day for our small but incredible team! God is great and he certainly blessed us today!
A moment that I will remember for years to come! Now it’s on to a couple weeks of tough training and preparation as This trio of Cardinals distance runners prepare for the IHSA post season!
