The Salem Wildcats lost their SI River to River opener falling at Harrisburg 31-20. The Bulldogs led 21-7 after the opening quarter and Salem trailed 24-14 at the halftime break. Salem got on the board late in the opening quarter when Kaeden Bevolo found Troy Keele for a 35 yard touchdown. Salem’s other score came on a 58 yard touchdown pass from Bevolo to Kyler King late in the opening half. Trey Clark led the Cats rushing 20 times for 132 yards with over 100 yards in the second half alone including a 23 yard touchdown run. Bevolo finished 5-15 for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns with 1 interception. Keele caught 3 balls for 66 yards, King 2 for 61. Salem will be back on the road at defending conference champion 4-0 Carterville next Friday.
Also in the River to River, Massac County beat Murphysboro 17-14, Carterville 58-20 over Herrin.
The Centralia Orphans won the battle on unbeaten winning at Freeburg 35-17 in Cahokia action. The 5th ranked Orphans jumped out to a 14-0 lead and forced 3 field goals in the first half by Mizzou-bound Dane Olmstead, the longest of which was 52 yards, as the score was 21-9 at the break. Kenny Bratton had 6 catches for 95 yards and 2 touchdowns from Archie Goewey who was 12-16 for 129 yards. Will Stanton rushed for 108 yards and a score, Ja’Shawn Staples had 94 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns including a 73 yarder. Cooper Kisgen led Freeburg with 137 yards on 23 carries. The Orphans will host Columbia in Week 5.
Also in the Cahokia, Civic Memorial nipped Jerseyville 32-29, Breese Central 44-26 over Waterloo and Columbia shutout Wood River 54-0.
Carlyle dropped the 3-1 on the year falling to Red Bud 23-8. Eli Gray had 92 yards for the Indians and Collin Rahm threw for 87 yards and a touchdown pass to Vinny Huels.
