A 62-year-old Patoka man was flown to a St. Louis Hospital after his car ran off Hawthorn Road east of the bridge near Freeman Road on the northwest side of Salem early Wednesday evening.

Salem Police say the car driven by Kenneth Adams left the road and overturned upside down in the dry creek.

The Salem Fire Protection spent about 40 minutes getting Adams out of the car.  Assistant Fire Chief Bill Fulton says Adams had been partially ejected through the window so initial efforts were to get him back in the car so they could safely use the Jaws of Life to lift the car and cut him out of the vehicle.

Once out of the vehicle, Adams was placed in an ambulance and then transported to the Salem Township Hospital helipad where he was flown for treatment at a regional medical facility.

The crash occurred at six Wednesday night.
