A single bullet — with no firearm — was found in a men’s restroom at Salem Community High School Thursday afternoon.
The bullet was presented to the Salem Community High School Administration and the School Resource Officer at 12:50 pm.
At approximately 1:00 PM, SCHS was placed in a “Hold” as a part of our all-hazards plan and additional Salem Police Department members arrived on scene.
Multiple students were interviewed and security footage was reviewed going back to the beginning of the lunch periods. No one was able to provide any knowledge about the bullet or
any credible information of a threat. After an extensive investigation, the Salem Police Department cleared the situation for a safe return.
As it was near the end of the school day, school was dismissed with a law enforcement presence from the Salem Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff’s Department.
Late Thursday afternoon, a K-9 unit from the Secretary of State’s office swept the school for the presence of ammunition. The search did not find any additional ammunition or weapons. Law
enforcement has given the all-clear to resume school on Friday.
School officials and Salem Police would like to encourage all students to return to SCHS on Friday. There will be a continuing community policing program to help the school to return to the business of educating kids.
