A 25-year-old Odin woman has died in a crash on southbound I-57 three miles south of Dix.
Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse pronounced Madison Burton dead in the emergency room of Good Samaritan Hospital. He says Burton was waiting in her car on the shoulder of the road for help to arrive to assist her in changing a flat tire. Her car was apparently struck in the rear by a pickup truck that had left the roadway.
State Police have not released details on how the crash occurred, but indicated a semi truck was also involved.
Jefferson Fire Officials say the impact caused Burton’s car to be pushed off the shoulder and to overturn. Burton had to be extricated by firemen. While an Air Evac helicopter had landed at the scene, the coroner reports Burton was taken by ground ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon instead because CPR was still being provided. She was later pronounced dead in the emergency room of the hospital.
The name of the driver of the pickup that struck Burton has not been released.
The crash was reported at 10:12 Thursday night. State Police say southbound traffic was diverted at the Dix exit until 3:33 Friday morning. All lanes have been reopened.
