Johnny Wayne Clark, age 81, of Centralia, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at SSM Hospital in Centralia.
Johnny was born December 18, 1944, in Washington, Indiana, the son of Alonzo Charles and Mary Ellen (Roach) Clark. His life would take him many places, but in his own words, he was “The Birth of a True HILLBILLY!”
Johnny proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he built a career as a field accountant within the coal mining industry and then worked for Prudential Insurance until his retirement.
He loved horse racing, car racing, and dirt track racing and particularly enjoyed helping his son with his sprint car. He never lost his love for hunting, fishing, and the outdoors that began during those childhood days in rural Southern Indiana. He enjoyed his morning coffee with friends at his favorite restaurant in Centralia, Bonnie’s Café, and appreciated the simple routines and friendships that made a life feel full. He also loved Good Ol’ Days in New Baden, Illinois.
Above all else, Johnny cherished his family and the title of “Grandpa Clark.” He loved cheering on his grandchildren at sporting events, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and eventually watching another generation arrive as he became a great-grandfather. He would show up with pies and sacks of potatoes at the holidays and fill a room with joy, laughter, singing, dancing, and “razz” the family with jokes while giving everyone nicknames.
Johnny is survived by his children, Tina Sager and husband Robert of Kell, Illinois; Tracie Prince of Avon, Indiana; and Danny Clark and wife DeVyn of Mims, Florida; four grandchildren, Kayla Weitzel and husband Nick, Katelyn Gargiula and husband Nick, Kelly Lugo and husband Niko, and Kasey Wilson and husband Philip; and two step-grandchildren, Landon Humphrey and MacKenzie Humphrey of Mims, Florida.
He is also survived by five great-grandchildren: Liam Weitzel “Fred” (4), Lexi Weitzel (9 months), Giavonna Gargiula “Clyde” (4), Alexander “Lane” Gargiula (2), and Lishai “Max” Lugo (8 months); along with extended family members and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo and Mary Clark, and his brothers, Robert Clark and Everett Clark.
Johnny leaves behind more than dates and milestones of 81 years. He leaves behind the stories of an Indiana 80-acre farm boy running through the pasture while his mother chased him for a whipping; a young basketball player proudly scoring 14 points; a little dog becoming a coon dog under the glow of a hunting light; his father working hard at the railroad; a music teacher holding a high school dance day; and generations of family who knew him simply and lovingly as Grandpa Clark.
Funeral services for Johnny Wayne Clark will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem, with Chris White, Jonathan Timm, and Dave Jarrett officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, August 3, 2026, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, where full military honors will be accorded in recognition of Johnny’s faithful service to his country.
