Illinois State Police has identified the man shot at an Effingham church. 36-year-old Allen Gattino of St. Charles, Missouri was wounded when wrestling for control of his gun with Effingham City Police and Sheriff’s Department Deputies after they were called to St. John’s Lutheran Church to investigate a suspicious person who wanted to talk to the pastor. Gattino was first taken to HSHS St. Anthony’s Hospital in Effingham before being airlifted to a regional hospital. There were no other injuries.

Kinmundy Police Chief Joe Duffy says Gattino is believed to have stolen a blue truck that was parked on Jefferson Street in Kinmundy that he then drove to Effingham. Gattino apparently had driven to Kinmundy in a vehicle stolen in Madison County in the Metro-East. Duffy said the vehicle was the second taken from the same location in Madison County. The first was abandoned when it became stuck in the mud.
