Elva Jane Carter, 88, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 4:04 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 2026, at Deaconess Illinois Medical Center in Marion, Illinois.
She was born June 8, 1938, in Marion, Kentucky, the son of Richard Hadley and Lettie (Roberts) Long. On November 1, 1965, in Shawneetown, Illinois, she married Bobby Gene Carter, and he preceded her in death on April 13, 2005.
Jane was a graduate of Waltonville High School, and was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon. She worked for many years at Sharps Drive-In, and was also known as “Grandma Jane” at Dr. Andy Hall Early Education Center.
She is survived by one son, Hubert Carter and significant other Valerie Rhodes of Mt. Vernon; daughter, Lettie Johnson and husband Kenny of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren, Christian Carter, Maquel Brown and husband Andrew, JohnLuke Carter, Karissa Mooney and husband Ryan, Dillon Johnson and wife Alana, Alicia Capps and husband Chris, Jessica Carter and fiancée Caleb McSparin, Katelyn Carter and fiancée Blayze Pierce, and Heather Carter; great-grandchildren, Theo and Layla Mooney, Lexi and Ryder Capps, Asher Pierce, Carter and Verlena Brown; sister, Sue Cook of Eldorado, Illinois; and sister-in-law, Charlene Long of DeLand, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Bobby Gene Carter, she was preceded in death by a son, James W. Carter; her parents, Richard and Lettie Long; twin brother, Everett Wayne Long; brother, John Long; and sister, Stella Mae Long; daughter-in-law, Kimberly (Clemons) Carter; and brother-in-law, Don Cook.
Funeral services for Mrs. Carter will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at the Osborn Funeral Home in Dix, with Elton Storey officiating. Burial will follow at Union Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, July 6, 2026, at the funeral home.
