The remarkable high school tennis career of Salem Community High School standout Jarett Rushing came to a close this weekend at the IHSA State Tennis Tournament, adding one final chapter to one of the most accomplished careers in program history.
Rushing, a product of Raccoon Elementary School and a cornerstone of Salem’s recent tennis success, once again proved he belonged among the state’s best players. Competing in the IHSA State Finals, he opened tournament play on Thursday with an impressive 3-1 record, advancing to the tournament’s final day.
His season ultimately came to an end Friday with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 loss to Triad’s Tate Moore.
While the loss marked the conclusion of his high school career, it did little to overshadow what Rushing accomplished during his time wearing a Salem uniform.
Rushing finishes his career with a 104-51 overall record, including an outstanding 70-14 mark over his final two seasons. He consistently excelled in postseason play, compiling an 8-3 sectional record in singles competition and a 3-1 sectional mark in doubles.
Perhaps most impressive was his performance on the state’s biggest stage. Rushing concluded his career with a 6-4 record at the IHSA State Tournament, finishing above .500 against the elite competition gathered from across Illinois. Achieving a winning career record at the state finals is a rare accomplishment and serves as a testament to both his consistency and ability to compete with the state’s top players.
His success continues a proud tradition for the Salem Wildcats tennis program, which has produced numerous standout players over the years. Rushing’s dedication, steady improvement, and postseason success have firmly established him among the program’s recent greats.
Although his high school career has ended, his tennis journey is far from over. Rushing will continue his academic and athletic career next season at Kaskaskia College, where he will join fellow area state qualifiers, including Centralia standouts Ethan Samples and Reed Ashford.
As Salem tennis turns the page to its next generation of players, Rushing leaves behind a legacy of excellence defined by more than 100 career victories, multiple state tournament appearances, and a reputation as one of the most successful players to represent the Wildcats in recent years.
For Salem tennis fans, Jarett Rushing’s career will be remembered as another shining example of the championship-caliber talent that continues to emerge from the Wildcats program.
