It’s always tough at the Class S volleyball tournament, with 16 regions compacted into southern Illinois, the state champion needs to win 4 matches in one day to take on the title.
This year Holy Childhood Mascoutah advanced through the gauntlet with wins over Steeleville, St Mary Alton, Ewing and Trinity Stewardson to pull off the championship run.
Willow Grove/St Mary opened with a win over St Peter and Paul 25-14, 25-21 and then eliminated Egyptian 25-22, 25-18 to advance to the semifinals against a very good Trinity Stewardson squad where they would fall 22-25, 19-25 to move to the 3rd place match. They fell in a tight 3-set thriller to Ewing 11-25, 25-20, 15-9 to finish their year.
Raccoon also made a state appearance this year, falling in their opener to Egyptian 23-25, 23-25.
