Fayette County State’s Attorney Brenda Mathis currently holds a 25-vote lead over Judge Wesley Gozia in the race for circuit-wide judge.

Voters in nine counties, including Marion, Clinton, Clay, Fayette, and Effingham Counties, cast ballots in the four-person race.  Some absentee ballots are still expected to be added to the count, so the race is still too close to call.

Unofficial vote tallies currently give Mathis 8,118 votes, Gozia 8,093, Effingham County States Attorney Aaron Jones 6,956, and Clay County State’s Attorney Phil Givens 4,775 votes.

Gozia easily won Marion County with 2,282 votes, followed by Mathis with 707, Jones with 515, and Givens with 287.  Gozia also won Clinton County.  Mathis won her home county of Fayette, as well as Christian, Montgomery, and Shelby Counties.  Jones took his home county of Effingham and Jasper County, while Givens won his home county of Clay.
