A 45-year-old Iuka man has been sentenced in Clay County Court to five years in prison for reckless homicide.

William Shuffled had pleaded guilty to the charge in January and was sentenced to the maximum five-year term on Wednesday.   He will have to complete a six-month period of mandatory supervised release after getting out of prison.

Shuffled was charged in connection with the death of 59-year-old Mia Daniels of Monticello, Arkansas.   She died as a result of the injuries she sustained in an October 2024 crash.

Illinois State Police say Shuffled was attempting to pass other vehicles including a semi while eastbound on U.S. 50 near the Xenia-Iola Road when she struck Daniels’ vehicle head on.

Shuffled was also seriously injured in the crash.  The driver of the third vehicle was not hurt.

Clay County State’s Attorney Phillip Givens said his heart goes out to the family in this case.  They lost their mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.  Givens says the fact that the maximum sentence is only five years when a life was lost is sad.  Givens is grateful for the investigation in this case.
