The Salem Lady Wildcats won their DuQuoin Tip Off opener over Christopher 36-28 in a game marred by turnovers and missed shots by both sides.  It was your typical first game of the season for both teams.  Salem got 12 points from Marah Johnson and 11 from Jordan Kessler to provide most of the scoring punch.  Caitlyn DeWeerdt was solid for the Lady Bearcats as the 6-ft junior finished with a game-high 16 points.  Salem will return to tournament play tomorrow night with a 6pm game against Webber Township.

 

Also at the tournament, Woodlawn beat Sesser Valier 50-44 and Pinckneyville over Cairo 71-12.

 

Sandoval fell in their season opener 35-27 to Ramsey.  The Lady Blackhawks were led by Jena Howell with 9 and CC Cullip added 7.  Anne Bennhoff had 20 to lead Ramsey.

 

The SC Lady Cougars fell on the road at Martinsville to open their season 42-24.  Lauren Johnson led SC with 7 points.

 

The Columbia Tournament opened up last night.  The host Lady Eagles knocked off Carlyle 57-51 and in the other opening round game it was Triad over Marquette 60-43.

 

Also last night in prep girls hoops Wood River beat Dupo 40-35, Effingham over Robinson 55-18, Johnston City beat Murphysboro 45-27.
