The Salem Wildcats have the IHSA Career Goal Scoring King.

Eli Baker needed 5 goals to tie Carlos Posada’s record of 177 goals set for Crete Monee in 2007-2011 and Baker needed about 30 minutes to get 6 goals as his team blew away visiting Wood River 11-0 in a game that was called at halftime due to the mercy rule.

Baker credited his teammates and coaches for helping him set the new mark of 178 career goals and counting as he spoke with WJBD Sports Director Toby Gullion after the game.

“Last year I was trying to break the single season record, and that didn’t happen, but then this year I knew I had a chance to break the career record and just very thankful for my teammates and coaches for helping me accomplish this.”

Salem also got 2 goals from Caleb Purintun and a goal from Austin Woolridge, Ramiro Mendoza and Robby Shober.

The Cats honored their 10 seniors as it was also Senior Day and improved to 16-2 on the year and will return to action Thursday with a trip to state ranked Newton before hosting Harrisburg on Saturday when they will try to finish their home season undefeated before finishing the regular season on Monday at Mattoon.
