The Salem Wildcats made a statement on Saturday knocking off previously undefeated Massac County (10-1-1) in Metropolis by a final score of 7-2. The match featured 3 red cards and 4 yellows, as the Wildcats (11-1) improved their winning streak to 11 straight matches.
The Patriots started putting pressure on the Wildcats defense, which held strong as Salem would eventually score as Eli Baker was fouled in the box and made the PK to make it 1-0 Wildcats. Caleb Purintun then scored two straight goals on his way to 4 goals on the day to make it 3-0 Salem at the end of the first half. The teams would exchange goals in the second half, but the Cats would hold on for the 7-2 victory.
The Wildcats will play for the conference lead on Tuesday at perennial power Columbia (7-2). Match time at 5:30.
