A 51-year-old rural Mt. Vernon man has been arrested for first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of his wife at their home.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested John Finney of the 7500 block of Illinois Highway 148 North after his vehicle was stopped in rural DuQuoin, and the body of his wife, 42-year-old Amy Finney, was found inside the vehicle.
Police had been looking for Finney’s vehicle after receiving a call Monday night of a possible homicide in Jefferson County. A possible location and suspect vehicle description were given. A Christopher Police Officer spotted the car and followed the vehicle while waiting for additional officers to arrive. The stop and securing the location were assisted by the DuQuoin Police Department, Perry County Sheriff’s Office, and Illinois State Police.
While this was happening, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies discovered evidence to support the crime scene at the Finney residence, which was secured with the assistance of the Mt. Vernon Police Department. Crime Scene Technicians from the Illinois State Police responded to both scenes for forensic processing.
Detectives from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the residence in Jefferson County and a felony stop location in Perry County to conduct the investigation and obtain search warrants for both locations with the assistance of the Jefferson County State’s Attorney.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department reports preliminary evidence gathered strongly supports that Amy Finney died from a gunshot wound during a domestic dispute with John at their home.
