Salem Fire Protection District Chief Dave Duncan says a Monday afternoon fire that destroyed a car being driven by Juanita Garcia Del-Valle of Mt. Vernon apparently started in the engine compartment.
Duncan reports a former firefighter who was following the vehicle on Route 37 north of State Route 161 reported smoke began coming from underneath the car before the fire erupted in the engine compartment. It then spread through the vehicle.
The occupants were able to get out safely.
