The Salem Wildcats dropped to 1-9 on the season with a 52-46 overtime home loss to Freeburg. Ayden Rose hit 2 of 3 free throws late in the game and down 2 with less than 10 seconds left in regulation, Miking Ettress drove to the basket and scored to send it to extra time. Salem was dominated on the glass outrebounded 34-18. Noah Nix led Salem with 15, Rose finished with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Kaeden Bevolo added 9 points. Multi-sport standout Matt Pluff led Freeburg with 14. Pluff was the New Balance National High Jump champion this past summer.
The JV lost 62-52. Avery Gullion led Salem with 16, Madden Thompson added 12 and Payton Gullion put in 11.
The Wildcats will finish up their pre-holiday schedule today when they host Wood River for Mega Day. The JV boys will tip at 11 followed by the varsity girls game at 12:30 and the varsity boys will go at 2. Both varsity games will be on WJBD this afternoon.
In the Cahokia Conference last night, Breese Central took an early lead in the league beating Columbia 53-43. Sam Donald led all scorers with 21 in the loss. Roxana beat Wood River 70-28.
The Centralia Orphans improved to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in the South 7 with their win over Cahokia on the road 75-56.
Christ Our Rock knocked off McGivney in conference play 63-40. Flora beat Eldorado 48-26, Mount Vernon knocked off Miller Career Academy 59-42, Olney beat Paris 51-31. Wesclin handed Carlyle their first loss of the year winning 61-51 and Waltonville knocked off Woodlawn in their rivalry battle 63-36.
Also last night, St Anthony pulled away to beat Dieterich in a big NTC battle 68-40. Brock Fearday led St Anthony with 19, Keenan Griffith added 15, Ryan Schmidt 14 and Will Fearday added 12. Bryce Bohnhoff led the Maroons with 10.
