A vacant two-story home burned to the ground on Toll Lane north of Mt. Vernon late Thursday afternoon.

Jefferson Fire officials say the house caught fire from embers from a nearby brush fire.  Once the fire reached the house, it spread rapidly.  Due to the condition of the home, firemen allowed it to burn.

The fire call came in at 4:30 Thursday afternoon, with firemen on the scene for about two hours.

Jefferson Fire received mutual aid on the scene from Mt. Vernon, Kell, Bluford, and Wayne City.   Woodlawn and Waltonville firemen stood by at the Jefferson Fire Station in the event of another fire.
