The Salem Wildcats scored a touchdown on their first offensive possession at Roxana last night, and only trailed 13-7 at halftime, but a dreadful 3rd quarter lifted the Shells to 40 unanswered points in their 40-14 victory.

The Shells scored their first score on a 57 yard fake punt taken to the house by Andruw Ellis who was a thorn in the Cats side all night.  The senior tailback finished the night with 12 carries for 206 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Not to be outdone, junior Mason Crump also diced the Cats defense for 10 carries and 146 yards with 2 touchdowns.

In the loss, Salem got a big night from senior receiver Lyric Black.  He caught 11 balls for 144 yards and a touchdown.  Caeden Bevolo finished the night 17-of-25 for 202 yards and a touchdown.  The Cats did fumble the ball 3 times that led to touchdowns for the Shells.

Salem is 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the Cahokia, while Roxana improves to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Also last night, Breese Central routed East Alton Wood River 48-0 to improve to 5-0 as the 2nd ranked Cougars will make the trip to Salem next week.

Olney moved to 5-0 on the season with their 56-35 win over Newton.  Red Bud beat Sparta 49-14 and Sesser Valier routed Christopher/ZR 50-6.

Tonight in prep football, Centralia will host Carbondale for homecoming.  Also in the Cahokia, Freeburg plays at Columbia.  Also tonight, Vandalia is at Virden North Mac and Mount Vernon is in Akron, Ohio to play Archibishop Hoban.
