Salem’s Super Cruise was Saturday September 7 th . The cruise began at 9 am with coordinator Ken Carpenter. Before noon on Saturday there were over 60 cars already, Carpenter explained he estimated over a 100 would show up in total. His vehicle being a 63’ Ford Pickup Truck. Carpenter has ran the Super Cruise since 2016.
One owner of a vehicle, Tracy Richie, was spreading awareness for Military Suicide and PTSD. Her son sadly passed away due to the cause. Him witnessing his friend being shot and killed in action, as well as relationship problems at home.
After some time, He then got into a car accident. Her son SGT Michael “COTY” Richie passed away due to suicide in July, of 2018. Tracy took her sons car, and restored it. Now, she takes it to car shows, and promotes awareness for Military Suicide and PTSD.
Tracy’s sister, Barb Neil’s son was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at Birth. A life-threatening disorder that damages the lungs and digestive system. The vehicle she displayed sported a glamorous purple. The same color as cystic fibrosis awareness ribbon. Neil is working to spread awareness and support for the cause with the car. Symbolling her and her sons fight through the disorder.
Not only was the Super Cruise a success but the messages behind the people, as well as the cars, were remarkable. The Super Cruise vehicles when entered are put into categories. The top three contenders of each category received a trophy.
As well as, Specialty trophies awarded. The Super Cruise took its drive through town at three, and returned back to Bryan Memorial park when finished.
