The Salem Historical Museum opened a new exhibit on Tuesday showcasing the life and work of Dr. Herbert Schoonover. Schoonover was an obstetrics specialist who became a general practitioner following in the footsteps of his father. He served in World War I, delivered over 5,200 babies (including the first in Salem’s hospital), and practiced medicine for a total of fifty-three years before his death in 1969, making him the longest practicing physician in Salem at the time.

The exhibit displays several artifacts of Dr. Schoonover’s life including photographs, degrees and certificates, medical instruments, and items from his army service. It also includes a page outlining his life story and accomplishments. The exhibit will remain on display for three months. These items were provided by members Schoonover’s family, several of whom were present to see the exhibit and share stories. Sandra Schoonover Konrad, daughter of Herbert, described her father and grandfather as role models and patriots, mentioning that both were active in American Legion and other veteran organizations.

Myron Lloyd of the Salem Historical Commission was there to present the new exhibit and discuss Dr. Schoonover’s significance to the community. He also noted that the museum is full of exhibits like this one which rotate regularly to make room for new pieces of Salem’s history to display.

The museum in the 100 block of South Broadway is open free of charge on Saturdays from 9 AM to noon.
