State Police confirm a 36-year-old St. Charles, Missouri man involved in a shooting at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Effingham on Sunday has died as a result of his injuries.

Allen O. Gattino had driven to the church in a pickup truck stolen earlier in the morning from Kinmundy.   Police were called because of his suspicious activity and the suspicious vehicle.  State Police say Gattino was armed with the gun and it discharged when Effingham City Police and Effingham Sheriff’s Deputies were attempting to gain possession of the weapon.

An investigation into the shooting is on-going by State Police who were asked to handle the investigation by Effingham officials.

Kinmundy Police Chief Joe Duffy said Gattino had driven to Kinmundy in a vehicle stolen in Madison County.   It was left behind the Kinmundy-Alma Fire station when it ran out of gas.  Duffy said he then walked across town with the gun in his possession to the pickup truck that he stole and drove to Effingham.
