What a night at B.E. Gum Gym as top-seed Effingham battled 5th seed Centralia for the Salem 3a regional championship. Those in attendance were treated to a fantastic game that ended up seeing the Hearts hold on 61-59 in double overtime. In the loss, the Annies got 29 from senior and 1000 point scorer Jalea Shered and 24 from sophomore Josiyah Wallace before she fouled out to start the 2nd overtime. Effingham advances to the Effingham sectional next week.
Also in 3a regional championships last night, Herrin beat Marion at Carbondale 61-48, Mahomet over MacArthur 53-40 at Danville, Jerseyville lost to Quincy Notre Dame at Jerseyville 49-30.
The Mount Vernon Lady Rams play for the Waterloo title tonight against East St Louis. Taylorville and Chatham Glenwood play from Springfield Southeast and Highland and Mattoon play at Charleston.
In 1a regional championships, Taegan Webster needed 22 points to tie the all time scoring record for girls basketball at South Central. Her team traveled to Christ Our Rock for the 1a regional championship against powerhouse Okawville, with the Lady Rockets winning the title 68-30. Webster finished with 9 points so she finishes 13 points shy of Abbi Hahns record and will be #2 all-time.
Also in 1a last night, Altamont beat St Teresa at Dieterich 52-44, St Anthony at home beat Windsor/Stew-Stras 50-43, Marissa beat Gibault in overtime 28-25 to win the New Athens title. Edwards County beat Christopher at Sesser 47-43.
Tonight in 1a regional title games at Mt. Olive, Brownstown/St Elmo takes on Father McGivney.
In 2a last night, TTown and Mt Carmel were tied at 40 with 14s left in their regional title game at Lawrenceville. Molly Ruholl made a huge 3 with 2 seconds left to lift TTown into the Sectionals with a win 43-40.
Robinson beat Carmi at Fairfield 39-31, Breese Central rolls through Carlyle to win the Pinckneyville Regional 51-30 and Massac County won the West Frankfort title over Harrisburg 57-40.
In 2a, Mater Dei hosts Nashville, Carterville hosts Vienna and Gillespie takes on Hillsboro at Virden North Mac.
In 4a at Collinsville, it’s Edwardsville taking on Alton. Last night at O’Fallon, the hosts beat Quincy 55-40.
