City of Salem kicks off Christmas season this weekend

The City of Salem kicks off the Christmas season this weekend.

The festivities begin Friday night with the city recreation department and Marion County YMCA Christmas family game night at the Salem Community Activity Center from 6 to 8 pm. There will be free food, games, crafts and fun for everyone including a visit from Santa’s elves.

On Saturday, activity moves to the 100 block of South Broadway with a variety of events from two to six. Recreation and YMCA Director Jed Casburn.

“We are going to have a movie, food trucks and Santa will arrive about 3:45 to take pictures with kids and they will get toys after that.”

The afternoon begins with the showing of the Movie ‘A Christmas Story’ at the Salem Theatre. There will be a hot chocolate and smore’s station at the ABC Pub cookie give away. The Salem Animal Shelter will have a special display. The Salem Community High School choir will provide Christmas carols. Mrs. Claus will be at the Salem Historical Museum. Activity is capped off by the lighting of the city’s Christmas Tree on Sweney Corner at 5:45 pm.

The Salem Community Theatre will have performances by the Salem Community Band and Choir at seven both Friday and Saturday nights. Traditional and Contemporary Christmas Music will be performed as well as some sing along songs. Tickets are $5 and available in advance at Salem City Hall and Sam Phillips CPA.
