The Salem Lady Wildcats ran away early and ran the clock late as they improved to 2-0 on the young basketball season knocking off Murphysboro 56-17 at the DuQuoin Tournament. 9 Lady Cats scored led by Marah Johnson with 12 and Kayla Felgenhaur with 11. Salem forced 32 turnovers in their opening night win over Sesser Valier, and last night forced the Red Devils into 37 turnovers, something coach Megan Kessler says can have its own set of challenges. The Lady Cats are back in action Friday night at 6pm against Pinckneyville with the winner playing in Saturday’s championships and the loser will play for 3rd. Friday’s game can be heard on 100.1 FM WJBD.
Also last night at DuQuoin, Pinckneyville beat Sesser/Valier 55-22, Cairo nipped DuQuoin 52-51 and Christopher over Woodlawn 52-38.
At the Columbia Tip Off, the hosts beat Father McGivney 43-40, Belleville East over Marquette 63-27.
At the Dupo Cat Classic, Wood River beat Marissa 40-37 and Dupo over MEL 39-36.
Vandalia won at the Nokomis Tournament beating Lincolnwood 48-40.
At the Sparta Invitational, Red Bud over Steeleville 61-34 and Chester beat Trico 44-38.
The Centralia Girls Tournament opens tonight. At 6pm it’s Mater Dei and TTown followed at 7:30 by Centralia and Highland.
In regular season play tonight, South Central looks for their first win as they host North Clay.
