For the first time since 2003-04, the Salem Lady Wildcats are regional volleyball champions after their 3-set win over top-seed Highland at Triad 27-25, 16-25, 25-19. Salem advances to the Mascoutah 3a Sectional on Monday when they get Cahokia Conference rival Freeburg in the 2nd game at 7 p.m. The opening game at 6 p.m. will feature Effingham and Mascoutah.
Also, in the 3a regional championships, Effingham won at home over Civic Memorial, Mascoutah beat Herrin at Mount Vernon and Freeburg won the Waterloo Regional over Carbondale.
In 2a, Breese Central was the 3rd Cahokia regional champion with their win over the hosts at Althoff. Pinckneyville beat Carterville at DuQuoin, Fairfield over Mt Carmel at Hamilton County, Murphysboro lost to the hosts at Massac County, Mater Dei won the Nashville Regional over Columbia, Shelbyville over Hillsboro at Vandalia.
In Class 1a, St Anthony beat North Clay at St Elmo while Windsor beat Arcola at Bethany.
