The Salem City Council Monday night approved the use of the Bryan Memorial Park Disc Golf Course for its first-ever Professional Disc Golf Association-sanctioned tournament on Sunday, October 15th.

The person who designed the Salem course, Brandon Shelton, says the tournament is part of a series being played in different cities across the Metro-East and South Central Illinois.

Salem Mayor Nic Farley told Shelton he hopes to see more tournaments in the future.

“It’s awesome.  It’s nice to finally do one of the sanctioned events.  We’ve waited a long time to have one of them here, so it’s pretty cool.”

Farley is also happy to see those from six states logged in during August to say they had played the Salem course.

In other action, the board approved a special use permit for Sheeler Rentals, LLC to locate a double-wide mobile home on a fixed foundation at 2154 Old Texas Lane. Sheeler has torn down an old home at the site that a tree had fallen into.

The council also approved a change in the zoning code to allow offices to be located in B-4 business zones without a special use permit.

The council gave final approval to the 2024 property tax levy which is 2.4 percent higher than last year and to a more detailed city investment policy.
