The Salem Wildcats used a HUGE 2nd quarter that turned a 14-6 halftime lead into a 47-6 advantage with a running lock the final 12 minutes as the Cats are 2-0 for the first time since 2018 with a 47-13 win over Alton Marquette.
Quarterback Sam Greene was 12-of-19 under center with 3 touchdowns. His favorite target was senior Connor Tennyson who caught 4 balls for 133 yards including a long 73 yard touchdown reception. Also with TD receptions were Noah Nix from 13 yards and Miking Ettress who had a HUGE game on both sides of the ball. Not only did he catch 2 balls including a 15 yard touchdown, but he also intercepted 2 passes including a pick-six for another score. The Salem defense also got interceptions from Trey Clark and Cooper Lobek.
Jeremiah Reinhart carried it 13 times for 108 yards and 2 scores. Greene rushed 9 times for 57 yards and a 17 yard touchdown run.
Salem will try to stay undefeated when they head to a place they have never won, dating as far back as the Apollo Conference, when they play at Mt Zion who beat Triad 39-28.
The Centralia Orphans fell to 0-2 with their 34-14 loss at home to visiting Collinsville.
Also last night, Breese Central came back to beat Mater Dei in the Milk Bowl 17-14, Mount Vernon fell to Carbondale 23-10, Carterville 35-14 over Nashville, Flora 20-14 over Christopher, Freeburg lost to Jerseyville 27-21, Olney fell to Mattoon 33-6, in double overtime it was Mt Carmel beating Effingham 36-30, Roxana over Red Bud 42-7, Columbia lost to Waterloo 14-0 and Vandalia over Staunton 21-7.
