A home converted into a duplex at 621 North Broadway in Salem received minor damage in a small smoky basement fire around noon on Saturday.
The three occupants were alerted by a passerby beating on the door that he thought the home was on fire.
Salem Fire Protection District Chief Jim Cerny explains what they found.
Cerny said, “We had a fire in the basement with smoke coming out of the first floor, second floor, and the attic. Fire was on the north side of the basement wall, they were able to go in and make an entry, find it, and put it out. The rest of the time we’ve just been evacuating smoke and making sure it hasn’t spread.”
The three occupants identified as Christina Miller, Mandee Patton, and Edward Kinney, Junior all got out of the home without injury. Fire officials say the home is owned by the estate of a man who recently passed away in California.
Odin Firemen were called on automatic mutual aid.
