A 30-year-old Mt. Vernon man was arrested on multiple counts after striking and killing an 18-year-old female pedestrian in the 600 block of Main Street on Sunday night.
Mt. Vernon Police say Mitchell Sharp fled the scene without clothing, but was found about two blocks away. He has been arrested on preliminary charges of reckless homicide, aggravated reckless driving, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, improper lane usages and aggravated driving under the influence.
Police report Sharp also struck a home.
Sharp was initially transported to a local hospital for treatment and then transferred to an Evansville, Indiana. Early Monday morning, police received notification Sharp was being released and took him into custody.
The pedestrian was determined to be deceased at the scene by medical personnel.
Illinois State Police are leading the investigation into the crash with Mt. Vernon Police Detective Division assisting in the criminal investigation.
Members of the Illinois State Police, Mt Vernon Fire Department, Mt Vernon Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and Litton’s Ambulance responded to the scene.
