Two Howards Grove, Michigan residents were taken to Salem Township Hospital for treatment of injuries following a single car crash early Sunday morning on I-57 at the 130 mile marker three miles north of the Kinmundy-Patoka exit.
Initial information indicates a car driven by 23-year-old Kayla Gilligan ran off the road, went down a steep embankment, and hit several trees before coming to a stop. Gilligan was able to call for help from her cell phone.
Kinmundy-Alma Fire and Ambulance were called to the scene to assist. Both the driver and passenger, 19-year-old Emily Gilligan, were out of the vehicle on the arrival of emergency help. The two were transported by United Medical Response to Salem Township Hospital for treatment.
State Police are handling the crash. Further details are not yet available.
The crash was reported at 3:44 Sunday morning.
