A 25-year-old Centralia woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a single-vehicle crash on US 51 south of Centralia Friday morning.

Washington County Coroner Mark Styninger said Michelle Allen was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash south of the Route 177 exit at Irvington.

The coroner reports she was driving southbound when she appeared to miss the Route 177 exit, continued south in the median, eventually striking a tree where the vehicle became engulfed in flames.

Styninger says the cause of death appears to be blunt force trauma secondary to thermal injuries and will be ruled as an accidental death.

Allen was extricated from the vehicle by the Irvington Fire Department

The case continues to be investigated by the Illinois State Police and the Coroner’s office.

Other agencies assisting at the scene were the Washington County Ambulance Service, Irvington Fire Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Department, and Wamac Police Department.

The crash was reported at 6:22 Friday morning.
