The Kinmundy City Council Thursday night heard an update on the renovation of the downtown Madison Street buildings.
Brenda Altadonna says work is continuing to stabilize and reuse the three adjoining buildings that had fallen into severe disrepair, leading to the roofing system collapsing on the middle structure.
Altadonna says after roofing work, installation of siding on the rear of one of the buildings, and removal of debris from the rear of the middle building, they are working to once again get the buildings occupied.
She reports one of their current projects is to reopen a portion of the former Carolyn’s Flower building as a food hall.
“The intent is to have 4 vendors and there is table for seating will be a large kitchen in back. Then the hoping to have local crafters to have stuff in there for sell and constantly change things out to keep the activity going.”
Altadonna says the food vendors would mostly do carry-outs. At least one of those expressing an interest would feature coffee.
The restoration group is also working to make meeting and office space available and use the former safe area of the old bank building to display historical items.
The Kinmundy Board was told Police Chief Kevin Berry had 20 students who he took shopping as part of this year’s Shop with a Cop program. Even though Berry is now a sheriff’s deputy, he remains Kinmundy Police Chief and is working a couple of shifts a week.
The board was told Dollar General is still making plans for their store on Route 37 at the north edge of Kinmundy. The goal is to begin construction in the spring.
The Kinmundy Library board is seeking grants that would allow them to expand their current parking.
