The Salem City Council Tuesday night ceremoniously swore in a new patrolman who is now in the department’s field training program.

Sarah Dice completed the 12-week police academy on December 9th.    Since then, Police Chief Kyle Ambuehl says Dice has been working with a field training officer and doing extremely well.

Dice is a graduate of Salem Community High School and is nearing completion of a degree from Southern Illinois University.   Ambuehl is pleased to see another Salem resident join the department.

“She’s from Salem, grew up here and it’s good to see someone that grows up in the community and wants to give back and work in the community.”

Ambuehl also announced that the department’s final opening will be filled by Austin Schoreck of Farina who will start the Police Academy in Belleville on Wednesday.   After he graduates on April 28th, he will begin the field training program.

In other action, the board once again approved the position of Deputy Chief of Police.  The position has been in place since 2014, but the approval was never placed into an ordinance.
