A bird’s nest is blamed for a smoky fire at the Salem Bryan Bennett Library late Monday morning.

The Salem Fire Protection District was first notified by the library’s fire alarm system.   At the same time, smoke began to fill two rooms at the library.

Fire Chief Dave Duncan says firemen felt the problem was tied to the heating system.

“We discovered there was a bird’s nest inside that was on fire.  We removed that and now they are waiting for the HVAC contractor to come to take a look to make sure everything is good.”

Firemen then used their large exhaust fan to remove smoke from the office of the librarian and the adjoining Friends of the Library room.

Librarian Kim Keller says the incident occurred after they had turned on the heat for the first time this fall.   She notes the library is about to replace two of its rooftop units, but not the one that caught fire.
