The Salem City Council Monday night will be asked to continue a garbage collection fuel surcharge and begin to pass along the $1 a month charge to residential customers.

City Manager Rex Barbee says when the request for the surcharge was approved for DBS Disposal, they agreed to relook at the issue in October.  DBS notes diesel fuel remains at over $5 a gallon and with OPEC shutting down production, costs are not expected to go down anytime soon.  Until now, the city was covering the extra expense.

The council will also get its first look at the proposed property tax levy for next year.  A second reading to approve the levy will be held in November.

The meeting gets underway at six Monday night at Salem City Hall.
