Eight fire departments battled a fire that burned about 50 acres of soybean field stubble in a field fire in the 9000 block of East Bakerville Road southwest of Mt. Vernon Friday afternoon.
Jefferson County Fire Protection District officials say the fire started as a controlled burn of tree stumps on the Herbert Denhm property. The strong winds and dry conditions whipped the fire into a just-harvested soybean field on the Billy Wilson property where it burned about 50 acres. No buildings were threatened.
Mutual aid was called from West City, Bluford, Waltonville, Woodlawn, Valier, Sessor, and Benton.
The fire was first reported at two Friday afternoon. Firemen were on the scene for about three hours.
