In a collaborative decision with the Salem Police Department, Salem Community High School Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering says school will be held as scheduled on Wednesday after a written message was found Tuesday afternoon on a restroom wall threatening a shooting at the school. Police presence will increase, and Detering says they will let everyone know right away if anything changes.
Detering says student and staff safety is their highest priority, and they would not move forward with a normal school day if the administration and Salem Police did not believe it was safe. Detering is asking students not to bring any unnecessary backpacks, duffel bags, or larger purses into the school on Wednesday.
Law enforcement was contacted immediately after school administration learned the message had been found on a restroom wall. An active investigation followed, during which multiple students were interviewed, and security footage was reviewed. Detering says they are treating the threat with the seriousness and gravity it requires.
Anyone with information related to the threat is being encouraged to share it with Salem Police, the school resource officer, or school administration immediately.
