BENTON, IL – Join the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and partners for a day of biking-themed fun in celebration of National Public Lands Day on Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rend Lake Project Office/Visitor Center. This event offers activities for all ages and skill levels.
Event Highlights:
Guided Bike Ride (10:30 a.m.): Park Rangers will lead a guided bike ride approximately six miles in length, going north on the bike trail from the Visitor Center. Participants will learn about native plants and have the opportunity to contribute to invasive species removal along the bike trail. All necessary equipment will be provided, but attendees are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and bring a water bottle and insect repellent. There will be a self-guided interpretive trail for participants who do not wish to join the stewardship activity. A limited number of electric bikes will be available for use courtesy of Southern Illinois E-bikes and Black Dog Bike Rentals. Pre-registration for the guided bike ride is required by calling the Rend Lake Project Office/Visitor Center at 618-724-2493 or emailing rendinfo-MVS@usace.army.mil.
Bike Safety Checks, Prize Raffle, Food Trucks & More (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.): Enjoy a variety of all-ages activities throughout the day. Visit the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office booth for a free bike safety check and information about Rend Lake Bike Patrol, sign up to win prizes, visit the Core Friends of Rend Lake to learn about becoming a member, and purchase food and drinks from onsite vendors.
