As Balloon Fest weekend began to wind down Sunday morning, organizers took the opportunity to say “thank you” to the pilots, crew members, and event volunteers who make the festival possible year after year. The annual awards breakfast was held at the American Legion in Centralia. Special recognition this year went to thirty-year steering committee member J.J. Demattei and thirty-year event sponsor, the City of Centralia.
The highlight of the morning was the presentation of the High Fly Cup, which is presented each year to a person seen as an ambassador for ballooning. The award often goes to a pilot, but occasionally is presented to individuals who highlight the spirit of ballooning and community in other ways. This year’s recipient is Susie Robbins. Patty Williams presented the award, noting that Robbins has been involved with Balloon Fest since its second year.
“So 36 years ago, my mother was the PR director at St. Mary’s Hospital. She went to this person and said, ‘Susie, we’ve got to have a first aid tent for St. Mary’s Hospital.’ And for 36 years, Susie has sat in that tent for three days at the Balloon Fest,” Williams said
In addition to staffing the first aid tent all these years, Williams noted that Robbins is always willing to help crew balloons, and has helped clean up the parks ahead of the events. Robbins says it was a shock to hear she was receiving the award.
“Totally surprised. Totally. I didn’t have a clue. I’m with the pilots, this very elite award. I’m in awe and humbled and honored. I don’t know that I’m worthy of it,” Robbins said.
There was no rest for Robbins after receiving the award, as she had to get back to Fairview Park to assist with the hospital foundation’s bike helmet giveaway for kids.
